Body and Soul
There once was a man who went to Africa on a safari hunt. He hired many members of a local tribe to assist him with the hunt, and he had great success. He had so much success in his hunt, in fact, that each day he got up earlier and earlier, and finished later and later, so that he could get more hunting in before he had to end his trip.
About a week into his trip, the hunter rose bright and early at 5:00 AM to begin his day of hunting. He went to wake up the local tribesmen, but they wouldn't budge. "No hunting today," they told him.
"Get up!" he cried. "I'm paying you and I need us to get started right now!'
"No hunting today," one of the tribesmen responded.
"Get up!" the hunter repeated. "Get up or I'll fire you!"
"No hunting today," another tribesman echoed.
"Get up! Please get up now! I'll even give you a bonus if you get up now!"
"No hunting today, sir!"
"Why?" the hunter asked. "We've gone out hunting all week, so why won't you go out now?"
"Because, sir," one of the older tribesmen responded, "it's time for our souls to catch up to the rest of our bodies."
It's time for our souls to catch up to the rest of our bodies.
It's the same for us, isn't it?
We fill our lives with excessive demands and overwhelming responsibilities, and pretty soon we feel like a runaway bus about to careen off the expressway.
But we know that God rested after He created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 2:2), and Jesus was resting just before He calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 8:23-27). Jesus also says, "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest." (Matthew 11:28)
So if you're overhelmed with responsibilities and you're suffocating from excessive demands, and if you're tired, worn out, burned out, have hit the wall, and want to throw in the towel and scream "No mas!", then come to Jesus. Get away with Him. Rest with Him. Rest in Him.
Jesus will help your soul catch up to the rest of your body.
